Punjab govt to create 16 medical colleges in next 5 years

On Sunday, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann expressed his vision for Punjab to become a global center for medical education. He made these remarks while examining the location of a forthcoming medical college in the district. The medical college, set to occupy 20 acres at a cost of Rs 428.69 crore, is slated to be named after Guru Nanak Dev, as per an official statement. The chief minister announced that the project, characterized by its finalized design, will commence shortly.

Anticipating a diverse student population from various states, Mann disclosed plans for constructing a hostel and a 300-bed hospital alongside the college. The Punjab government, he noted, has ambitiously committed to establishing 16 medical colleges within five years, thereby increasing the total count to 25 institutes in the state.

Mann highlighted the ongoing work on the Sant Attar Singh State Institute of Medical Sciences in Mastuana Sahib, Sangrur, and the upcoming medical colleges in Kapurthala and Hoshiarpur. He expressed confidence that these initiatives will negate the need for aspiring medical students to seek education abroad, emphasizing the provision of high-quality medical education within Punjab.

Criticizing previous administrations for neglecting medical education, Mann underscored the AAP government’s focus on health, education, power, and clean water. He reiterated the government’s commitment to maintaining peace in the state, emphasizing efforts to discourage a culture of violence and instructing the police to take action against those promoting hate speech.

Subsequently, Mann visited the site of another upcoming medical college in Hoshiarpur, dedicated to martyr Shaheed Udham Singh. Spanning approximately 23 acres, this medical college is projected to cost Rs 418.3 crore, further contributing to Punjab’s aspirations in the field of medical education.
